Syllabus

 

Course outline

 This course is engineering-oriented introduction to the nanoscale devices and designed to provide strong intuitive foundations on the manipulation and acquisition of physical information. Nanoscale devices are central to the engineering and scientific research where quantum effects dominate not only for electrons but also for other related particles such as photons and phonons.  In this regard, the phenomena and devices at the quantum scale will be discussed in comparison to their mesoscale counterparts. The recently emerging area of integration among various fields would be surveyed firstly in terms of electromechancal devices followed by the devices based on the electromagnectic-matter interactions.

 11th week Electromagnetic-matter interaction and devices: Plasmonics
 12th week Electromagnetic-matter interaction and devices: quantum cascade and phonon lassers
 13th week Perspective discussions on the future devices
